Henna Tattoos (Mehndi)

Direct application of dried henna paste, which is a reddish-brown color, to the skin to create a temporary tattoo is a process known as mehndi. This henna is a plant-based coloring that is approved in the United States only as a hair dye. It is not approved for direct application to the skin.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has received reports of skin injury when henna products are used to create temporary tattoos. In most cases, the problems aren't caused by the natural henna itself, but from the chemicals added to some henna products to make the tattoo appear darker and last longer. These products are often sold as "black" or "blue" henna. The most common problem caused by these henna products is a skin reaction (contact dermatitis) to the dye. Permanent loss of skin color (hypopigmentation) in the design of the original tattoo has also been reported.

The risk of having a more severe allergic reaction to the chemicals added to these henna products is higher if you've had contact dermatitis before. For this reason, it is recommended that you avoid henna tattoos and hair dyes if you've had a previous problem with an allergic reaction to a temporary henna tattoo.

Your first henna tattoo should be in a place where you can cover it if it lasts longer than you expect. It's not a good idea to try to remove your henna tattoo. Let it naturally wear off. Be very careful not to damage your skin. Do not scrub or pick at your tattoo.
